Everything Goes to Hell - Tom Waits

Brilliant song...sums up today's antics.

Everyone needs to experience the music of Tom Waits

Why be sweet, why be careful, why he kind?
A man has only one thing on his mind
Why ask palitely, why go lightly,
Why say please?
They only want to get you on your knees
There are a few things I never could believe
A woman when she weeps
A merchant when he swears
A thief who says he'll pay
A lawyer when he cares
A snake when he is sleeping
A drunkard when he prays
I don't believe you go to heaven
When you're good
Everything goes to hell, anyway...

Laissez-faire mi amour, ce la vie
Shall I return to shore or swim
Back out to sea?
The world don't care what a soldier
Does in town
It's all hanging in the windows
By the pound
There are few things
I never could believe...

A woman when she weeps
A merchant when he swears
A thief who says he'll pay
A lawyer when he cares
A snake when he is sleeping
A drunkard when he prays
I don't believe you go to heaven
When you're good
Everything goes to hell, anyway...

I only want to hear your purr and to hear
Ou moan There is another man who brings
The money home
I don't want dishes in the sink
Please don't tell me what you
Feel of what you think
There are few things I never could believe...

Movie Review - Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Or how I learned to stop nitpicking and like the movie)

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FILM.

Let me start off by saying that I did like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The following will probably make it sound like I hated it, but I didn't, I'm merely a fanboy with some complaints. And complaining is what Fanboys do best.

I saw the flick Sunday w/ my buddy Mike, we were supposed to hit the IMAX, but underestimated the drawing power of 'splosions & Megan Fox, and found that it was sold out, so we got tickets for the next available show in the regular screen. Little bummed, but 'oh well'.

It starts off really strong, there's a good intro section with narration by Prime, then a great action sequence with the Autobot/US Military team taking down a behemoth Decepticon in Shanghai. It was great to see new characters like Arcee (who was supposed to be in the first movie). But Arcee was confusing, because she's supposed to be a motorcycle, singular, but they kept referring to her as The Arcee Twins, and then they would show three separate motorcycles. So why not say Arcee Triplets...? Also in the beginning is an unnamed Autobot Corvette, who was hard to differentiate between the Decepticon Audi R8 who they were fighting. Lets stop making all the robots Silver and/or Grey. I like that most of the Autobots are colorful. It helps to distinguish who's who. But when you've got a fight with Ironhide (black) and Autobot Corvette (silver) fighting Decepticon R8 (also silver) it gets difficult to tell them apart. The first movie had the same problem though.

The biggest problems for me was how long it was, and how much unnecessary stuff they had thrown into it. By the end of the movie, I was ready for it to be done, which is sad, because the end of the movie is really good. And I wish that I hadn't been hoping for it to be over, but I was ready for the credits to roll. I think it's because they took too much time with a lot of unnecessary stuff in the beginning of the movie. Had they taken out scenes in the beginning, it would have made the ending better, at least for me personally.

Pretty much all of the college stuff could have been cut. I really loved the parents from the first movie, and they were good in this one, but there was just too much time wasted on Sam and his parents in the beginning. It seemed like all this stuff would have made good DVD deleted scenes, or even and Extended Cut DVD. Even though it was funny, seeing the mom get high and tackle Frisbee-golf players isn't really necessary. The stuff that really should have been cut was the scene w/ Sam's roommates. There was no payoff to explaining that his roommates were big conspiracy theorists with a website devoted to proving there are alien robots. The roommate would have worked as just that, a roommate. Then there was this 'first day at college' party, that did have a lot of funny stuff and also served as Sam's first mental breakdown, but again, not needed. The scene in Sam's astronomy class was a better, mental breakdown scene, and probably the only one that was needed.

The party scene did serve as an introduction to the FemBot who was hunting Sam. But even her character subplot could have been scaled back, or even removed. Her purpose was basically to get Sam away from his guardian, Bumblebee, so that Megatron could get his hands on him, to extract Cybertronian information from his brain (which is causing his mental breakdowns). Getting Sam from college and into Megatron's grasp could have been done without the addition of the FemBot character.

This is really about the point where the film picks back up and gets rolling again. There were lots of great action scenes from here til the end. I really dug the whole 'on the run' stuff and cat and mouse between Decepticons and Autobots. I liked the globe spanning Indiana Jones-ness of trying to decipher the ancient clues that lead them to Egypt. Although I was really confused as to how, they go to Washington DC to an Airplane Museum, resurrect an old timey SR71 (Jetfire), then go out the back door and you see plains (not planes, but plains) and mountains in the background??? What part of DC is surrounded by vast fields and mountains?

My next big gripe was how every time there was a fight, they put shit in the way. It seems like a lot of good action was covered by a tree, pillar, column, or scafolding. I understand that it was probably done this way because the first movie was so popular, thereby demanding a sequel ASAP, which rushes the CGI artists and makes it more difficult to animate and render big battle scenes. Which is why they take little shortcuts by obstructing the view. But c'mon, when Optimus is delivering the final blow in the end fight to The Fallen, don't do it in a narrow doorway. Do it out in the open in the middle of the sand with a nice wide angle shot.

Lastly, do we really need all the forced laughs that come with 'potty humor', lets see: Two shots of dogs humping, a RC truck humping Megan Fox's leg, Jon Turturo's ass in a thong, Jetfire 'farting' a parachute, and a giant pair of robot testicles on Devastator. There are more, but those are the ones that really stood out. And I didn't even mention the (Jar Jar) Twins.

All in all, this movie was good, but not nearly as good as the first. I think because I spent over a year prior to the first movie scouring the internets to find leaked pics, rumors and any/every detail about the movie I could, and with all the hype and expectations I had built up, it delivered and was better than I had thought it would be. And at the end of the first one, you absolutely know that there is a sequel coming, so the mystique of seeing the robots for the first time, and seeing the transformations for the first time has been ruined. It's kind of like with Batman Begins, same thing, I was on the forums everyday and trying to find out about it, then with Dark Knight, I wasn't as concerned because I knew that it was the same crew and cast, and I had some idea of what to expect.

So like I said, it sounds like I hated it...but I actually really liked it...those were just my thoughts as to how it could have been better. I would have preferred this to be a more condensed version, and then all the unnecessary stuff added into an extended cut or something. So in summary, less exposition up front = more enjoyment at the end, and less stuff in the way of beautiful fights and transformations...

Roll Out!

Aircasts and Legends...

And Lo! A post!

It's been a minute since I put my thoughts and observations out there for the rest of the world to see.

So it's June, May went by with nary a blog post, and I feel bad about that, not because I feel like I'm letting anyone down or anything...just that, for a solid month I couldn't come up with anything interesting to talk about.

Lets see, what's been going on...

I damn near broke my ankle at my friend Jessie's house. As I tried to maneuver the simple task of stepping off the porch, I underestimated how low the first step was. When my foot did not make contact when I suspected it should, my body went into panicMode! Thus causing me to turn my ankle, and then make contact with said step. Resulting in a tumble that was most unexpected. Thankfully, no one was around to see this stunt, and no beer was spilled. I kept ice on my now puffy and double-sized ankle the rest of the evening, and thought 'No big deal'. The next morning...it was a big deal, as I could not put any weight on the ankle without sending pain through my entire foot. I decided to ignore everyone's suggestions of going to Immediate Care, and threw a borrowed aircast around my battered hoof and hobbled around for a few days. The aircast, or as I preferred to call it "Iron Man Boot", helped greatly. Every once in a while I step on it wrong and there's some pain, but for the most part, I'm back in original condition...

I've turned into a Call of Duty geek. I'm re-playing Modern Warfare on ultra-hardcore-death-mode, I can't get enough of that game, and now that the PS3 is hooked up to the internets, Online Play has been in full-swing, despite the fact that I'm a total noob and my kills to death ratio is about 1 in 5. It'll get better, just gotta put in my time...

I've seen a lot of really good movies lately...
Star Trek - excellent
Wolverine - good
I Love You Man - excellent
Up - very good

Along with recently becoming a CofD geek, I'm also completely absorbed in all things LOST. The show is amazing. I burned through Blockbusters supply of seasons 1-4 in about 2 months, and am now waiting (painfully) until Season 5 is released on DVD some time in December...this will not do...there must be another way...Arrrg

Musically I've been trying a lot of new things out...I'm really getting into a lot of older stuff, such as Bob Dylan, Sonic Youth, Frank Black, Pixies, Tom Waits. Thank you Adam Bowen for working at LOFT long enough to upload his entire iTunes library onto our server. Seriously, the dude started work on a Monday, and left on Friday, while everyone else was at lunch...all he left was an empty chair and a voicemail explaining that he took a new job in Ohio...and a Legend was Born.

Well...I feel like this has been a good start to get back into the swing of things...we'll see if I can keep it up.

until next time...

Sorry BIC

So it's been over 1 month since I started my quest to only use a classic, no frills blue 'round stic fine' BIC pen. ScottyO said to me that he didn't think I could go a month using no other pen but this one. I've gone above and beyond. I don't even miss the old smooth Deluxe Signia.

Screw that noise...it's back to the Atlas Deluxe Signia Twist Pen for me!

...can't think of anything witty for a title...

Well, I made it. 26 years on this planet, and what have I got to show for it? I'll tell you what, a lot of really great people in my life. We had a little swarray Saturday night that went really well. From what I can tell, most people had a good time. The night started off really slow, but before I knew it, the whole thing was in full-swing and I was feelin' no pain. I discovered that I am now able to drink tequila again w/o disposing of it instantly. I was introduced to a fantastic concoction called a Green Varmint. Take one shot of tequila, followed by one shot of pickle juice. Sounds gross, but went really well together. Try it. We had a bartender for the evening (Kandis) who I think did a phenomenal job. I'm not sure if anyone was able to stump her. I'm pretty sure that my Beer Pong partner (Rob) and I won 3 games in a row. Something inevitably caught my attention and distracted me from playing anymore for the evening. At one point a neighbor from across the street and a few houses down had to intervene and tell me that we were all being too loud and that if we kept it up she'd call the po-lice...so everything was moved inside and the garage door was shut. Sorry neighbors.

The rest of the evening was spent indoors mingling with the other partygoers, snacking on some food, and enjoying more tasty beverages. It seems that at some point people began leaving. I hope that I was able to thank everyone for coming, but as it stands, I cannot necessarily remember saying 'goodbye' to everyone. We had much fewer people crash at the house than I was anticipating, I'm hoping they all had responsible drivers. As of writing this, it has been a few days since the event, I have not heard of anyone having any trouble arriving home.

Sunday was spent lounging around the house not accomplishing much of anything, we attempted to clean up a bit, but I slept most of the day. Thanks to everyone who came for allowing me to have a great time. I think this was one of the best house-parties we've thrown so far.

And now, movies you should see...

Day Zero

Starring: Elijah Wood, Chris Klein, Jon Bernthal, Ginnifer Goodwin & Ally Sheedy

The movie is set in an alternate modern day in which The Draft has been reinstated. As the movie opens three friends are each recieving and reading their draft letters. They all have 30 days to report for duty. The film spans those 30 days following each of them as they wrap up their affairs.

Jon Berthal's character, Dixon is a young guy with little going on in his life. He drives a cab, drinks beer, and gets into a fight. Of the group, he is the only one who is looking forward to serving his country. Much of his time is spent arguing with his friends that what they are being asked to do is right and for the good of the country. Early on, he meets a girl and quickly falls in love. By the end of his 30 days he begins to question if he is truly ready to go to war.

Elijah Wood's character Aaron, spends his time working on his novel, while attending psychiatry sessions with an uninterested Psychiatrist played by Ally Sheedy. Aaron spends most of his time throughout the film worrying about what people will think of him and how weak he is. After receiving his letter he devotes his 30 days to attempting to get into shape while accomplishing a set of goals such as go skydiving, get a tattoo, and sleep with a prostitute. His arch takes him from being a geeky and shy novelist to pushing himself into situations to test his resolve. Ultimately he pushes himself too far when 'day zero' arrives.

Chris Klein plays George, a well-off young lawyer spends his entire 30 days trying to find a way of getting out of his obligation. He becomes more desparate and willing to try anything to avoid serving. He and Dixon spend much of the film in opposition of eachother, resulting in the breakdown of their friendship. Dixon and George have opposite character archs. One feels it is his duty, the other, that his life is too 'on track' to be interupted. In the end, these two come to terms with eachothers point of view, as well as what to do when when 'day zero' comes.

The movie is entirely performance driven. There is not much action or comedy. The dialogue feels completely real and natural. I think this movie is a great representation of how people would be divided while dealing with a draft.

until next time...

con⋅ti⋅nen⋅tal

Is anyone fooled by the words "Continental Breakfast" anymore? I mean really? Why not just call it what it is: Free doughnuts and bagels. Or if euphemisms are necessary: Complimentary Breakfast. Why the word Continental? What is sexy about Continental...why not Nationwide Breakfast? Has a Continental Breakfast ever been the deciding factor in staying at the Days Inn over the Holiday Express? I doubt it.

Thanks to Dictionary.com for the assistance.

I'm really jazzed about this upcoming weekend. We've got the house looking about the best it ever has. I'm looking forward to our Birthdayapalooza, I turn 26 on Saturday and Amanda turns 26 the following Tuesday. We're having some friends over and it should be a great night. Hopefully the weather stays true to AccuWeather.com and gives us a warm day. Currently the RealFeel temp is holding at 69 degrees during the day and 42 at night.

Recently I've been getting back into video games hardcore. Amanda and I have been putting massive amounts of time into the Wii. We love the feature that allows you to download classic games onto your system. We've downloaded the original Super Mario Bros., as well as Super Mario 3, and Super Mario World from the Super Nintendo. It takes you back.

And now...A Podcast you should be listening to:

Soccergirl, Inc

If you like a chick with a fantastically filthy mouth, this is the pCast for you. Soccergirl, AKA - Anneke Rudegeair is a podcaster from Upstate New York. She is completely original in her content. She puts out a multitude of shows, both audio and video: Soccergirl, Inc, Ask Soccergirl, and Feisty Meatball (coming soon). She'll routinely break into song, freestyle and recorded. Her stories are always amazingly unique and crazy. She speaks her mind no topic is too taboo for her to discuss. She has a "supporting cast" which consists of her fiance - Ryan P. Murray, Eliza (sister) and Jake (brother), and UK Johnny. There is no rhyme or reason to the show, it follows no format, other than most episodes end with call-ins from listeners. She keeps the show very conversational and light which makes you feel like you're in the room with them and are a part of the discussion.

Topics of the show can range from Smurfs to bodily functions, and then from Star Trek to politics.

You can jump right into the show without having to listen to the past 4 years worth of shows. But, I highly recommend checking the older eps out anyways just because of how entertaining it is. I've been listening to her show since '05, and it's great to see how she has evolved the show, while staying true to who she is.

You can subscribe to her show via iTunes, or find her all over the web (myspace, facebook, twitter, etc...). Check out her website at www.soccergirlincorporated.com - be warned that it's not always safe for work (she likes to show off her boobs).

Thanks for the hours of entertainment Soccergirl.

That's all I got for right now...

...stay out of the deep end...

I'm not sure why I try to do things that I shouldn't do. I need to accept that there are things that I'll never be. I'll never be a photographer. I have a standard digital camera, but I do not have a 'photographer's eye'. I am continuously taking pics of something visually interesting with the intention to create my own FlickR page, to share with the world. But as it stands, I have a big chunk of my iPhoto which is filled with pics that never make it to Photoshop or the internets. Good intentions. But I need to give up the notion that I can create amazing photos with my digital. I'll just continue using my digital to take pics of friends at party's. To sum up. I'll leave the pretty pics to the professionals.

I find that more recently I've been giving up more things...not on some epic scale. But big for me. I read fewer comics, I watch fewer TV shows. I'm losing the idea that I must finish what I've started. Years ago I would never turn off a movie once I've started it. A few weeks ago I'm watching Max Payne, and I shut it off after the first half hour. It just wasn't holding my interest so I decided to quit watching it instead of wasting another hour+ by watching it. I'm not slagging the movie, I'm sure it wasn't horrible, it just wasn't keeping my attention.

In a lighter note...

It's pretty crazy that in 2009, Pirates are still a threat on the open seas. But really, when you think about it, Piracy is a timeless career. It doesn't have to be relegated to the 1700's(?). Nowadays, they have faster boats, better technology, cooler weapons. But so does the opposing side. So be careful out there pirates. We're all counting on you.

That's it for now...

...busy

Well, it's been a few days. I found out that apparently a few people have been reading this thing and enjoying it. Good to know.

As I write this I'm listening to Pearl Jam's re-release of their 'Ten' album. Still a great collection of songs (as well as some new ones) that have held up for 19 years.

(Friday 4/3)
Went to dinner at Grindstone Charley's with Amanda, Rachel & Eddie, Rob & Kendra, and Bridgette. Had THE BEST salmon ever. Had terrible service, which is rare for G-stone Chuck's. After dinner we went to Drifty's for a few.

(Saturday 4/4)
Picked up my new spectacles Saturday morning. I'm really diggin' em, and they've been pretty well received by others. We had breakfast at a tiny little place in Greenwood, called 'Simple Brew'. It's on Old Meridian between Main Street and County Line. I recommend the B's & G's*. They had decent coffee and good prices.

After breakfast we went toy shopping at Toys R Us. We only purchased 3 things. One was for me (20th anniversary edition of Princess Bride, to which I'll get to later), one was for my niece Claudia, and one was for Amanda's mom. We went there with a specific goal of buying birthday presents for our other niece Madyson. I hate shopping when you're after a particular thing. I'd much rather be in search of nothing and happen across something. We abandoned shopping for the rest of the afternoon. We opted to head to the grocery store in order to get supplies for me to make egg salad. We had a craving for egg salad sammiches. And I make damn good egg salad.

After boiling, re-boiling, and re-re-boiling the eggs, I managed to get them cooked all the way through. I hate hard-boiling eggs. Love hard-boiled eggs, but I can never remember the proper way to do it. They turned out fine though.

The rest of the day was spent lounging around, getting caught up on some of the weeks TV. The new season of Reno 911 kicked off with a decent episode, not as strong as previous eps, but they had to introduce new characters. I'll definitely miss Garcia and Clementine.

That night we went out to a bar for the 22nd birthday celebration in honour of Nathan 'Cooter' Schipp. The gathering took place at 'John Waynes' which boasts the most pool tables under one roof in the Indianapolis area. After losing 3 games of pool (I'm sorry Ray Martin) I was done with billiards for the evening. We had some drinks, some laughs and could here a really decent cover band in the distance playing some good Beatles and Johnny Cash tunes.

(Sunday 4/5)
The party ended up moving to Rachel and Eddies house for further studies of the effect of alcohol and the human anatomy. We played some Beer Pong, or Pong Toss, as it's known to the kiddies. Around 4 (guessing) in the morning, Eddie decided it would be a good idea for the remaining party-goers to gather round and watch 'Wanted' on BluRay. Fantastic movie. Horrible time to start a movie. As Cooter was passed out behind the couch, we started watching the flick. I believe Ben was the first one to fall asleep about 20 minutes in, followed by me. As the end credits began crawling I was disturbed from my slumber. Apparently at some point during the movie, each of us had fallen asleep.

I believe we got home sometime after 6:00

Amanda and I were up 3 1/2 hours later to get ready for another birthday celebration of our niece Madyson (5). We quickly showered, dressed and raced to Target to acquire the gifts we failed to get the day before. After a quick in and out at Target, we headed to Shelbyville to pick up my other niece Claudia who spent the night at Granny & Grampa's. With Claudia in tow, we headed to Greenfield to 'That Fun Place', which is Chuck E Cheese without the horrible animatronic band. The pizza was decent, and the kids seemed to really enjoy the games and rides. Headache commence.

Arrived home around 7:30, chopped up the eggs and finally made the egg salad. We watched someTV, I think 'Rules of Engagement' and 'The Soup'. Went to bed.

As promised...Princess Bride, if you have not seen it, is not a chick flick, as the title may have you believe. It is a story about a 'princess bride' who is trying to find true love. It is a hilarious, odd, quirky movie directed by Rob Reiner, with performances by Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Billy Crystal, Andre the Giant, Mandy Patinkin, Fred Savage and Peter Faulk (as well as many, many other great actors). There's lots of great swordplay, great dialog, hilarious moments and great imagery. This movie also features one of the greatest delivered lines in movie history..."Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father, prepare to die." The movie is worth watching for that scene alone.

Campers: 1 Weather: 0

This weekend some of us went camping, despite what the Weathernazi told us would be a gloomy, wet and cold weekend. I wont lie, there was lots of wet, and lots of cold, but no gloom...There was plenty of dry wood to keep us warm, and plenty of beer to keep us numb. We played quite a few games of Catchphrase, which is the best game to play whilst sat round the fire. I believe the guys won the Catchphrase tournament. The food this weekend was excellent, thanks to Kendra for the hobo pizzas and Dale & Greg for dinner Saturday night. Friday night was beautiful, with plenty of stars in the sky. Most of Saturday was great with a little bit of rain during the day. Late Saturday night we got the worst of it, but still we had fun, and it was pretty exciting having to fight the wind and rain from tearing apart our canopies.

We were excited to see how well our new gear held up through the wind and rain. The new tent kept us dry and the canopy didn't fall apart.

Sunday morning was the coldest of the entire trip. We quickly made our breakfast and began to pack up our gear. On the way back home we drove through a patch of freezing rain that I'm glad didn't hit us earlier that morning.

As it is with any vacation, Amanda and I returned home and dreaded the unpacking process. We managed to get all the laundry done, but we are waiting for some sun to air out the tent.

Thanks to Amanda, Eddie & Ratchel, Rye Bread & Kendra, Brent & Liz, Nay Nay, Dale & Greg, and Rigby & Tonka for making this weekend great.

It's not looking good...

I keep checking the weather, thinking the winds will change and send the rain, thunder and snow away from us this weekend. I don't think my chances are that good...Either way, the car is mostly packed and ready to go, and the site is only about an hour away. If things get too bad we can pack things up and be back home never the worse for wear.

No matter what the weather brings, there will definitely be good times, good laughs, and good friends this weekend.

Thursday, March 26, 2009

To start this off I just want to make sure it's clear that I am not a writer, and I will never pretend to be. I'd like to use this blog as just a collection of thoughts. This is going to be a semi-regular affair, that will be more for my benefit than anyone else's. Although I do hope that other people get some enjoyment out of it.

Lets get right down to it.

This weekend is going to kick off the start of "Camping Season '09". Rain be Damned! I'm looking forward to it, despite the knowledge that at some point I'll probably wake up in the middle of the night freezing cold and wet. The wife and I accomplished our goal of 2008, which was to purchase a new tent. I think I'm more looking forward to trying out the new tent than the actual camping itself. We chose the tent because it slept six, has two doors and in its center can accommodate a 6'3" human. Even though I tower at an impressive 5'8", it's comforting to know that I can get dressed without having to be bent over or trying to shuffle into my pants while on the floor.

Camping Tip # 3,458:
Save your dryer lint. It makes a great firestarter.

In just less than a month I will be turning 26. I'm really starting to regret the fact that the entire year I've been 25 I have not taken advantage of renting a car. Isn't that the big benefit of turning 25...for shame. To think that I could have been renting cars like a mad man, abusing the insurance policy and nearly destroying fine automobiles, and simply wheeling across town to return them no questions asked. I've been such a fool. Sure I can still take part in this tried and true rite of passage, but at this point, would it be as special...

And now...Music You Should Be Listening To.

Band: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Album: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Why: If you're into Radiohead and enjoyed the carnival as a kid, then Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is for you. They have a unique style that is damn near impossible not to enjoy the hell out of. The first time I was exposed I was hooked. Personal faves from this album "Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away" and "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth". Thanks to ScottyO for introducing them to me.

www.clapyourhandssayyeah.com

I think that's enough for now. I'll try to post often with more everyday life events, as well as music, movie, comic book reviews, or just whatever else I'm interested in at the time...
